| WINNER’S CIRCLE | ||
| Wolf says… 1. No. 48’s skill, luck: A pit stop call by Chad Knaus moments before a yellow flag gave Jimmie Johnson the final lead on Sunday. 2. Kyle Busch wins: The Las Vegas driver should patience Saturday at Fontana, Calif., and rallied to win the Nationwide race on the last lap. 3. Pro Stock drivers: They refused to race after Sunday’s first round due to poor track conditions caused two crashes and other close calls in factory hot rods last weekend in NHRA race at Firebird near Phoenix. 4. Richard Childress Racing: After missing last year’s Chase, the Chevy team’s Kevin Harvick finished second and teammate Jeff Burton was third on Sunday after Clint Bowyer was fourth at Daytona. 5. Greg Anderson: Straight talk by the champion driver on ESPN about pathetic Firebird Raceway track where two Pro Stock cars crashed along with a couple Sportsman cars. |
Kantowski says … 1. Golden horseshoes: If you find one on the pit lane, put it in your pocket. Or wherever Kevin Harvick said Auto Club 500 winner Jimmie Johnson put his. 2. Richard Childress Racing: After looking like Moe, Larry and Curley last year, Harvick, Clint Bowyer and Jeff Burton are looking like Manny, Moe and Jack after the first two races of this one. 3. Dave Blaney: Somehow, the Ohio driver managed to lead a lap at California despite one very conspicuous absence: His pit crew. Blaney started the race despite not having one and pulled off the track when it came time to stop for fuel. 4. Adam Mosher: Jamie McMurray’s rear tire guy jumped on top of Kevin Harvick’s hood in the pit lane to avoid getting mowed down during a pit stop. It reminded me of when Bo Jackson ran up the side of the wall after hauling in a long fly ball off the bat of some guy who was probably on steroids. 5. For the three people who care: 2003 Indy 500 winner Gil De Ferran is back in the sport that might have made him famous in the 1970s. He is joining with Jay Penske, you-know-who’s son, and another guy named Steve Luczo to field a car for Raphael Matos on the IndyCar circuit. |

| BACKMARKERS | ||
| Wolf says … 1. NHRA fatality: Spectator at Firebird was killed Sunday by a flying tire off the Top Fueler of Antron Brown. 2. Firebird Raceway: Bad track. See Nos. 3 and 5 above. 3. Fontana crowd: The track always has excuses – economy, weather, Oscars, etc. — but can’t come close to filling its 92,000 seats for either of its two Sprint Cup races. 4. Weather forecasts: Any time they call for rain on a part of a race weekend. 5. Danicamania: Only one more weekend until she heads back to IndyCars for four months and falls out of the headlines. Very good driver, just not worth the hype. |
Kantowski says … 1. I hate it when drivers get hurt or killed: I hate it worse when spectators — like that woman at the drag race near Phoenix last weekend — get hurt or killed. 2. Idle turnstiles: They should take all those empty seats at California and ship them to Daytona Beach. Then they should take the second race date at California and ship it to Daytona Beach, too. Run a race on the beach, and nobody will accuse NASCAR of ignoring its past. Run a race on the beach, and you won’t need Danica Sue to sell tickets. 3. Junebug: Fifty-nine and counting. 4. Danica Sue: Two and counting. 5. Jimmie Johnson. He wins too much. Like the Yankees. |
