Santa delivers for charity at LVMS
The annual grant distribution for the Las Vegas chapter of Speedway Children’s Charities was held on Wednesday night at Las Vegas Motor Speedway with over 70 local children’s charities sharing $275,000.
Each charity is invited to attend the festivities and they are encouraged to bring a child and their family to represent the charity. Those children get to go up on stage and receive one of those giant checks on behalf of their organization.
After dinner (a kid-friendly feast of popcorn chicken, French fries and macaroni and cheese) and entertainment was provided by dance group Future Shock, one of the groups that receives grant money each year.
The children were treated to a surprise VIP guest, who instead of arriving with reindeer power he used horsepower. Santa Claus arrived sitting in the window of a Richard Petty Driving Experience race car. The kids exploded with cheers when they heard the car roaring up outside the media center at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
The best part of the entire evening was when the kids got the opportunity to sit with Santa for a picture. They are then given an age-appropriate wrapped gift and a candy cane.
A little 5- to 6-year-old girl clutched her wrapped gift tightly to her chest, squeezed her eyes shut, and smiled ear to ear. A young boy said after he received his gift, “Oh boy, I’m going to have a good Christmas now;” and a younger boy was so excited that he couldn’t even wait till he had left the line before he completely unwrapped his gift.
Those are a few examples of what made a year of volunteering for Speedway Children’s Charities worthwhile.
