Shepherd racing for Jesus, me

On my birthday, I got almost as excited for the driver who finished 17th in the Nationwide race as I did for Carl Edwards winning. I know 17th place is not usually a finish to get overly excited about, but if you’re a fan of Morgan Shepherd, that’s definitely something to cheer about.

Mr. Shepherd is not your “ordinary” driver; he’s racing at the amazing age of 67. The ages of the current top-3 in the Nationwide points standings are 24 (Kyle Busch), 30 (Carl Edwards) and 25 (Brad Keselowski).

Mr. Shepherd certainly doesn’t act his age. Have you ever watched coverage during a rain delay and saw someone roller skating backwards down pit road? You got it, that’s Mr. Shepherd. I’ve even heard Carl Edwards, who has one of the most intense workout programs in the garage, say he couldn’t keep up with him when he’s out there on his roller skates.

Mr. Shepherd has been racing in NASCAR since 1970. His last win in the Nationwide Series came in 1988. His underfunded Victory In Jesus Racing/Faith Motorsports team is out there most race weekends to attempt the races. He’s struggled recently to make the races, which is really sad because he’s not a “start and park” car. When he does make the races, he runs the entire race. Not only has he made the last 3 races, but he finished 21st or better in each race.

This man is so well respected in the NASCAR community, that other drivers, like Kevin Harvick and Tony Stewart, have pitched in their own money to help Mr. Shepherd pay for tires so that he can run the whole race.

He truly is an old-school racer in that he shows so much patience and respect on the track. He’s not out there for the fame and fortune. He’s out there for the pure love of the sport. I have yet to meet any NASCAR fan who, when you mention Mr. Shepherd’s name, doesn’t get a big smile on their face. NASCAR Nation knows how special this man is and he has earned the respect of every member of NASCAR Nation.

So next time you hear Morgan Shepherd’s name called in driver introductions or mentioned during a race, cheer a little louder…he’ll hear you.
